Minority Groups: Get Fucked
I hate minority groups. They all think they're better than me. And maybe they are, but I detest the fact that they're sure they are better than me and I'm indifferent on the issue.
Why is it considered socially OK to have a TV show where gay people tell straight men how to dress and act? If I started a TV show where I went around to gay people's houses telling them that they're lifestyle is disgusting and they should start living like me, you know what would happen? I'd get kicked into the street like a dog by every fascist, whiny minority group member in Australia. And the media and the law would support THEM. That's right, I'd be a villian just for sticking up for my own lifestyle choices and beliefs - which is what minority group's entire fight for equality is based on.
Feminists should stop being idiots too. They aren't even a minority group, anyway. In fact there are more women in the world than men. Why did they ever even bother fighting for equality? Half the human race are women - it's not like they're lacking in numbers. If you're not equal, it's your fault. That didn't even make any sense. I have no penis.
Everybody in the world is in some sort of minority group of some kind. You should all be fucking ashamed of yourselves.

I think that J. Sinclair's suggestion that 'homosexuals' and 'women' are 'oppressed' or 'disadvantaged' is incorrect.
By naming these groups, ie as 'women' (that's all women in the world) and 'homosexuals' (that's all homosexual's in the world) he is imposing fixed and bounded identities on people. His arguments disregard the multiple ways in which identities and subjectivities are formed. An individual's identity and subjectivity are formed in multiple and contradictory ways over space and time, and in intersection with race, ethnicity, age, location, etc.
To assume that one aspect of identity, such as sexuality or gender, forms the entire relationship of an individual to the world is an 'economist' proposition, that thinking people reject. To label groups as 'oppressed' or 'otherwise disadvantaged' places uniformity and homogeneity on groups. Moreover, these crude and ugly categorisations impose essentialist and static identities upon individual's who possess agency in multiple ways.
So: people within redundantly constructed categories, such as 'women' or 'homosexuals', are both different, more complicated than one little baby category, and many possess power in different ways, and at different levels.

In the context of the media we are looking at the perceptions of the group as a whole, and individuals identity is of limited relevance, for the very reason that it does pertain to individuals.
The categories are hardly redundant in real terms. It is all very well to argue out what the appropriate label to give groups is, but in the end an economist proposition is appropriate. At the heart of the media reaction (and that is what we are talking about) is a response that derives from the tangible disadvantage that these groups suffer.
In term sof this disadvantge we can look at acceptance as equals within society or on pure average wage levels - it real doesn't matter.
They crux of the point is that these groups are in someway disadvantage when viewed as a group. That is beyond serious argument.
The media, and popular culture (in the colloquial sense) give these groups an opportunities that would not otherwise be available to them in response to this. They are given the opportunity to overcompensate - to move themselves closer to where they should be placed in society as equals.
The question was posed as to why are women fighting for equality given they make up half the human race. My answer is that they do so, and perhaps at times excessively so because overcompensation is a more effective tool to achieving an equal.
Rhetoric about an individuals identity and subjectivity is neither helpful not particularly interesting. If thinking people would reject my economist proposition, it is only because they have spent too long ponder the principles and not enough living in the real world.
To label these groups in uniform terms may well place a degree of homogeneity on them that is inappropriate when interacting with an individual, but is entirely suited to an analyse of the treatment of the group as a whole.
